The annual Swimming Gala took place at the Victoria Park Swimming Pool on 7 September 2023. Despite the gala being held just one week after the start of school, the morale and spirit of Paulines remained strong and steadfast.

After Father Shazz led a prayer for good sportsmanship, Assistant Vice Principal Miss Ng declared the start of the event.

This year’s gala was exceptionally energetic and competitive. With the pandemic finally behind us, Paulines could once again give their all in cheering for their houses. Even the Form one students, who had only joined a few days prior, put forth their best efforts to cheer alongside their seniors. It was truly an astonishing scene to witness.

Flags of orange, blue, red, yellow, green, and purple fluttered in the stands, accompanied by passionate cries and chants from the spectators. The cheering from Oak House was particularly fervent, and once again, they secured the title of the Best Cheering Team.

The highlight of the event, of course, was the swimming races. The gala began with the C grade 50-meter freestyle event. In each race, our swimmers demonstrated tremendous effort, executing their dives, kicks, strokes, and breaths with skill. They sliced through the water with great agility, their muscles straining against the tension. Every breath they took revealed their determination for victory. The swimmers drew on the surrounding cheers to fuel their strokes and propel them forward.

Numerous interesting things took place. At one point, during the B grade 200-metre freestyle, only one swimmer showed up for the race. Confusion and intrigue filled the faces of everyone as the solitary swimmer swam alone. As expected, he secured the victory. However, he still gave his all in the 200-metre swim, displaying the passion and unwavering spirit of St. Paul's students.

Another notable scene was the teacher relay. Mr Bobby Poon and Miss Fedoris Tse engaged in a fierce aquatic battle. The race began with a splash, as both teachers dove into the pool. The two math teachers battled ferociously, with Miss Tse initially taking the lead due to her impressive agility. However, Mr Poon’s endurance ultimately led him to victory. Everyone watched the race with great enthusiasm, witnessing their teachers competing with utmost determination in a swimming competition filled everyone’s blood with excitement.

Following the races, the awards ceremony took place, where the winners proudly stood on the podium displaying their hard-earned medals of triumph. We congratulate Pine House for winning the overall champion award for the annual swimming gala, as well as Oak House for becoming the cheering champion once again.

The event concluded with the school cheering team delivering an impressive cheer for all St. Paul’s Students. Members from all six houses formed a large circle, chanting together for the school. In the end, everyone stood up and sang the school song, marking the conclusion of the annual swimming gala.
