Principal's Cup

While many people prefer to stay indoors during the chilly winter, energy and enthusiasm were palpable at the Principal’s Cup basketball match held on 19 December, 2023. Despite the 13℃ weather, sweat bathed the concrete of the lower playground as players for the alumni and teachers teams strove to show their team spirit and unwavering determination.

After Principal Mr. Yuen kicked off the event, both teams displayed remarkable energy, with neither managing to break through the other’s tight defense. However, exploiting their physical fitness, the alumni were the ones to break the deadlock. This motivated them to score again soon afterwards, leaving the teachers trailing.

As the game wore on, both teams started to feel their energy drain, and players became exhausted. This was when the teachers launched a surprising counter-attack, scoring points after making strategic substitutions. Even though the alumni were still five points ahead, the teachers refused to back down.

Mr. Herman Tang had an opportunity to take a free throw. The atmosphere grew tense, and the court went silent as he focused on his technique, the ball in his hand, and the open basket. Mr. Tang sent the ball soaring through the air and swishing through the net. Applause and cheers filled the air, exuding effervescence and exuberance in response to this cool-headed feat.

In the final moments, despite their waning energy, both teams fought their hardest. The teachers were still a few points behind, but they stunned everyone with a last-second surprise: a teacher passed the ball to his teammate, who dribbled past several exhausted players with lightning speed. Skillfully evading two defenders, he stepped back and sank a three-pointer on the final whistle, securing the victory for the teachers 101-97. The crowd erupted in cheers.

As one of SPC’s most highly anticipated annual traditions, the Principal’s Cup brought students, teachers, and staff together, exemplifying the cherished brotherhood of SPC. This year was no exception, with a thrilling and nerve-wracking match put on by teachers and alumni. We look forward to the Principal’s Cup next year, when another victor will emerge from this showcase of SPC spirit.
